Pioneer Q & A
How did you start working remotely? Was it something you sought out or stumbled into?
I had to relocate due to my husband being accepted into a graduate program. I moved from Denver, Colorado to Erie, Pennsylvania and was able to keep my job of ~9 years working remotely for the same company.
Do you still work remotely?
I still work remotely, although now for a different company where most of my coworkers are also remote.
What do you do for work and for fun?
I am a DevOps Engineer for work (sometimes for fun too), and have a lot of hobbies including playing with arduino and raspberry PIs, hiking, biking, snowboarding, drawing, quilting, knitting, playing music, and most recently sailing.
What cities do you call “home” and why do you want to be a Workfrom ambassador?
Erie, Pennsylvania, USA
How did you find out about Workfrom and why do you want to bring it to your area?
I found out about Workfrom from Assembly and a similar product trying to do similar things.
Any tips you’d like to share for others wanting to or already working remotely?
Be sure to make connections with other people doing similar things that you can have philosophical conversations with, especially if you’re not getting great communication or feedback from your team at work. And make sure to take scheduled breaks like you would in the office! It might feel like you’re slacking, but it’s actually really important to keeping you focused when you’re working.
Any tips for those wanting to visit and work from your area?
Erie is fairly behind the times on websites and even updating Google maps. You generally just have to wander into places to find out if they’ll work to work from or not. Hopefully with Workfrom’s help we can change that and give people more appropriate ideas of what it’s like to work from specific places here.
What do you like most about Workfrom, and what would you like to see above all else come from us in the next year?
I honestly haven’t had much opportunity to use Workfrom since it’s not in my area. I have travelled to Portland and noted some places from the Twitter account before I headed out there, but I was fairly limited while I was there on where I could actually go. I guess I would like to see it in more places in the next year 🙂
