The Chipped Cup

Workability Rating

"Cute dive coffee shop. Air Conditioned, good espresso and baked goods. Often busy and pretty loud with chatter and music. 2-person and 4-person tables and a stool counter, with outlets on the right-side wall. They don't use wifi slips here anymore. It's 6 hours (240 minutes) free."

This place has a nice, cozy basement atmosphere with exposed brick walls and seating to accommodate 30 or more people at communal tables, deuces along the walls, and a sofa up front. There’s also a patio out back. During summer, be aware that the huge air conditioning units on the ceiling blow cold air directly onto certain seats, making it very cold to sit there. Outlets are only available along the walls, so there tend to be wires across the floor. My strategy is to grab whatever table I can as near as possible to an outlet and then grab the outlet table when its occupant leaves. In New York, it is common to share a deuce table with a stranger. New Yorkers are used to sharing space and being packed in. The cafe serves coffee, tea, bagels, and both sweet and savory pastries. During the day it’s generally staffed by two baristas, one of them friendly and helpful, the other aloof and surly. The quality of the coffee and food is good, and I like to come here for the atmosphere. If you are living in Washington Heights, this is a very convenient spot. It’s near both the 1 train and the M4 and M5 buses. The down side is the bathroom. There is just one, with only one toilet, and it is pretty much always filthy or broken, and the guys behind the counter act like it’s your problem.

  • One of my favorite spots to work from, enjoy a cup of coffee or tea, with a pastry. Internet works fine and wifi is free.
