91springboard, MG Road

Workability Rating

"This is probably the best bang-for-your-buck coworking space in Bangalore. They're pretty big, and they know what they're doing.Unlike many places in India, their Internet is pretty good. They have dual leased lines from distinct ISPs. One is TATA and the other is AirTel. Personally, I've found that their TATA line drops packets intermittently when it routes through Singapore. When I asked them about this issue, they updated their system (by pinning to my mac address) so that all my traffic goes out through AirTel. Good luck getting that kind of service from any of the hundreds of coworking spaces in Bangalore. Springboard really knows how to operate a coworking space!Everyone gets 24/7 access. There's always a guard on-premise, but after payment you'll be able to let yourself in via biometrics.Their cheapest plan is for hotdesks. The first floor has two big hotdesk areas, but most of the building is occupied by small businesses renting out walled-garden office space. Note that the pricing on their website is a bit of bait-and-switch as it doesn't include taxes. In 2019, their cheapest plan is 7,788 INR = ~110 USD.Note that auth on their wifi requires you to auth through an unencrypted captive portal. There's a guest option that sends an OTP via SMS, but I don't have a SIM, so I never tried that.MG road wasn't near to my lodging, so I visited a half-dozen other coworking spaces before 91 Springboard. I found that most of them gave me a *lot* of shit when I asked if I could test their wifi before paying for a subscription. One said that they'd have to collect KYC info (as I was told is a mandatory req for coworking spaces as mandated by the government) before I could even connect to their wifi. Many of these places I visited that *did* let me use their wifi had packet loss somewhere along the link.Compare that to 91 Springboard. When I asked if I could test Springboards WiFi, they gave me 3 free days. No KYC required. After 3 days I was sold, and then they did collect my KYC info, give me access to their internal portal, and set me up with a (thankfully distinct) account for wifi radius auth over their encrypted captive portal. My biggest complaint about Springboard is that, while they have free coffee and tea, they don't have mugs! They have paper cups, and most of their bins are *full* of paper cups. Such a waste! If you work here, walk "

I rate this place’s Internet 3/4 stars, mostly because their default ISP (TATA) drops a lot of packets, making work unstable and–at times–unuseable. I couldn’t even run my favorate speed test when I was connected through TATA because of the connection issues. So if you encounter issues (in my case, sometimes ssh sessions would take 1-10 seconds from the time that I typed a character to the time that character appeared in my remote shell–effectively unworkable), just ask their front desk to switch you to AirTel.

The following stats are specific to their AirTel network:

Ping was min 7ms max 124ms. Jitter ranged from 0ms to 85ms.

Download consistency was 94.4% with speeds ranging from mni 8 Mbps to 9 Mbps. Download bufferbloat anged from 30ms to 136ms.

UploadConsistency was only 67.3% with speeds ranging from 5 Mbps to 16 Mbps. Upload bufferbloat ranged rom 14ms to 208ms.

I am including this rating because the workfrom “Workability” rating is a grossly insufficient measurement of rating the quality of Internet. I’ve contacted Workfrom about this many times, but I have yet to find a public forum or issue tracker to address it properly. Workfrom’s speed test only looks at throughput, but in my travels I’ve encountered–for example–a symmetric 1000/1000 Mbps connection on fiber that still couldn’t do a simple audio call because of jitter and bufferbloat.

In my experience, most cafes that I visit have decent throughput (for most things, a solid & symmetric 200 Kbps is sufficient anyway; more than 5 Mbps is generally superfluous), but they have so much packet loss, jitter, or buffer bloat that they are not workable if your work requires you to connect to a VPN or do some RTC (ie: voip, jitsi, skype, hangouts, etc).

My biggest complaint about Springboard is that, while they have free coffee and tea, they don’t have mugs! They have paper cups, and most of their bins are *full* of paper cups. Such a waste! If you work here, walk <1km to the Nilgiris supermarket and buy yourself a steel cup for 30 INR ($0.50).

There’s also a kitchen on the 5th floor that serves snacks and lunch M-F. It’s just 70 INR ($1) for a veg lunch set, which is great because everything is crazy expensive around this 91 Springboard location on MG Road. For comparison, I usually spend 200-500 INR for a decently sized lunch at the veg hotel across the road on the weekends.
