How did you start working remotely? Was it something you sought out or stumbled into?

When I wrote my first book (The Complete Civil War Road Trip Guide), I was spending most of my after-work time in coffee shops writing. I loved it – the energy, the community – it was inspiring. So when I got an opportunity to make my “real job” remote, I jumped at the chance!

Do you still work remotely?

Yes, every single day, and I can’t imagine going back!

What do you do for work and for fun?

I am an occupational health specialist who works for a software company based in Toronto; I travel and help others who do what I do implement the software. I also write Civil War travel guides – three published so far, and more coming!

What cities do you call “home” and why do you want to be a Workfrom ambassador?

Chicago – one of the world’s great cities, but still a city of neighborhoods. I want people (Chicagoans too) to see them all!

How did you find out about Workfrom and why do you want to bring it to your area?

I think I saw Workfrom on Lifehacker? It seemed like a great idea – not only because I work remotely, but since I travel so much for both jobs. Sometimes it’s tough to find a good place to work, so we need to keep helping each other!

Any tips you’d like to share for others wanting to or already working remotely?

It’s definitely not for everybody. There are some things you sacrifice – personal work relationships, for instance. But you can usually compensate for those by getting out in your community and supporting local businesses – you’ll form some of the best relationships of your life.
Also, switch it up – that’s key! The last thing you want – even on a cold Chicago winter day – is to realize that you woke up, started to work early, and all of a sudden the sun’s going down and you haven’t left your computer. Get up and get out!

Any tips for those wanting to visit and work from your area?

The possibilities and opportunities in Chicago are endless… you can find anything you want or need here. Just ask – we’re proud of our city, and will go out of our way to help you feel at home!

What do you like most about Workfrom, and what would you like to see above all else come from us in the next year?

I love the coverage, and the fact that I can submit from seemingly anywhere. I can’t wait to watch it grow!
