Breken Kitchen

Workability Rating

"It's a popular spot for lunch, so plan to arrive early or after lunch rush if you want a seat. Get here before 11:30 am if you want breakfast. There is a montessori school across the street, so around 3-4 there are parents and kids in the cafe and it can get loud. You have to pay to park in the lot, unless you get one of the few spots marked "cafe". If you park in one of the other spots, watch out! Parking is enforced. 1-2 hour on street parking available."

Breakfast sandwiches are key here, as well as their gluten free muffins. Really great food, service, ample seating, and overall so pleasant.

I love coffee shops that master the food bit. I think a lot of coffee shops don’t realize that having great food options actually scales faster and better for them – people can eat all day, but it’s pretty damn hard to drink coffee all day unless you want a heart attack or to go to the bathroom 50 million times! Their paleo bowls at lunch are great too. Solid prices so everything it won’t break the bank, plus seriously every single thing I’ve had is genuinely tasty.

I have worked here multiple times and agree with what everyone else has said about the great food and friendly staff.

Today, however, I kept getting an error message from Google where I was prompted to enter a capcha due to “unusual network activity”. The message didn’t go away into I disconnected from the wifi network and reconnected. Has this happened for anyone else?

Lastly, I recommend getting here in the morning and then leaving around lunchtime. First of all the breakfast food here is great. Second of all, Breken gets really crowded at noon. So, if you aren’t into working around noise and crowds and you want to have an easier time getting a seat, 10 or 11 am is the time to arrive.

  • i’m all ready at the breken kitchen. why? ‘cuz i be BREKIN’ BAD!! BOO-YAH!! #heisenberg (wifi password today, 13-jan.-2016, is “breken123”)

Just moved to PDX and this quickly became my regular hang-out. Staff is awesome, it is a great place to work, drink coffee and have lunch. Love it.

  • They just updated their WiFi:

    Network: Breken_1 (or Breken_1_5GHz)
    Password: breken123
    Speed: 50.60 down / 4.88 up

Make sure to join “Breken_1_5GHz” if you can!

    • This makes me so happy!

Recently increased WiFi speeds. Much more usable now. Food still great!

  • Lots of natural light–very nice. There is a password for the wifi. I had to re-enter it twice. Wifi was mostly okay, with occasional spotty moments, so save regularly!

  • Also one of my favorite places to work, I can confirm that the wifi is often faster than reported and prior to a few months ago – was rather spotty and unreliable. It seems like they may have changed their wifi system as it’s a new login system and I haven’t run into any connection issues recently. Currently, speeds are showing a wide variety from 6.8-16.2Mbps down / 5.6-6.2Mbps up.

For anyone looking for natural light- this place is a winner. Even in the grey winter months, natural light floods in. Can’t wait for summer, when the windows open and the patio is comfy.

  • Love this spot! The baristas are super friendly and the food is great (at least, the two times I’ve ordered food have been great). Can’t say much about the wi-fi, because I bring my own hot spot, but this place is awesome and super work-friendly. Oh! And it’s great to have the option of wine/beer as well.

Agree, the food options here a great and it’s a super work-friendly place. The Wi-Fi is unfortunately slow and unreliable.

  • Interesting that you got such slow network speeds. I used to work here all the time and generally was very impressed with how fast and reliable it was.

I’m here often and will check again. It’s possible things vary at this location. I’ll update with the latest speeds next time we measure. Thank you.
