Last week we started asking the question, “just who is the mobile worker” and promised a sneak peek at an upcoming series showcasing our community members. Here’s that sneak peek as we meet the winner of our free ticket to the Freelance Conference in Austin, Texas.
First, let me start by saying how awesome the Freelance Conference organizers are. We first heard of the conference last week when someone tipped us off and within 2 days, another handful of folks kept recommending that we meet. Emily graciously offered us a ticket even though the conference was nearly sold out — and a short day later, the contest was born. After only 1 hour, Kelly Love Johnson recommended her first Workfrom location and won the ticket.
How did you start working remotely? Was it something you sought out or stumbled into?
I moved to Austin in 2009 to work for an agency, began taking contract clients after about 10 months, haven’t looked back! I have a great home office, but have to get out and about. I sought it out; I met lots of creative professionals in Austin and so many of us work remotely; it’s great to have virtual coworkers, but nice to be around people.
How did you find places to work from before Workfrom?
Word of mouth from freelance friends.
How did you discover Workfrom?
Word of mouth from freelance friends.
What do you like most about Workfrom?
I’ve just begun using it, but I love the detailed info on coffee shops!
What would you like to see above all else come from us in the next year?
Meetup groups for coworking maybe?
In response to her request for coworking groups, we introduced her to Austin Virtual Workers – a very active and welcoming group who work from coffee shops a few times a week. (And I just discovered that they’re also a community sponsor of the conference.) We’ve recently begun compiling a list of community groups on our EVENTS page, so be sure to check it out for Workfrom related events in your neighborhood.
You can meet Kelly Love Johnson — Writer, Editor, Media Consultant — online as @kellylove on Twitter and hopefully at a local Austin meetup soon. Thanks, Kelly!
